What does Search and Rescue do?

In Wallowa County, Search and Rescue (or "SAR") personnel typically respond
to reports of lost or injured hunters, hikers, fisherman, horseback riders, river
users, and other backcountry users. In addition to responding to emergency
search and rescue calls SAR members assist the community in a number of
other manners including:

• SAR provides a constant presence on standby at Salt Creek Summit during the Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog races;

• SAR personnel have been called to assist law enforcement in searches for evidence in criminal cases;

• SAR members, especially the K-9 team, present demonstrations at the local schools, instructing children on how to avoid becoming lost and what to do if they become lost; and

• SAR members have been asked to be available for backcountry notification of danger during wildland fire incidents.
